Balpakram Tourist Places: A Hidden Gem of Wilderness

It is a mysterious and ecological wonder blanketing over more than 200 kilometers squared of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot-one of the richest ecosystems that India has. This park is defined by rugged topography having plateaus, waterfalls, caverns in the limestone, and deep valleys, with spectacular views termed "India's Grand Canyon." Add to it the dramatic scenery of Mahadeo hills and the Simsang River, and you find a climatic condition due to elevation and closeness to the Bay of Bengal, allowing for lush and diverse vegetation, ranging from tropical evergreen forests to high-altitude grasslands.

Balpakram literally means "land of perpetual winds" in the Garo language, yet stands for much more than physical aspects. Indigenous Garo tribes hold the land to be hallowed; there are souls who believe it to be a temporary resting place before crossing into the afterlife. Chitmang Peak and Boldak Matchu Karam are two spots within the park that have deep cultural and spiritual significance lined with myth and folklore and landscape.
