After a hearty breakfast, you will begin your day with a drive to Puri, en route visiting Dhauli. Dhauli is a significant Buddhist site on the banks of the River Daya, where the famous Kalinga War took place. Here, you will explore the Peace Pagoda and the ancient rock edicts marking Emperor Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism.
Next, stop at Pipli, an artist village renowned for its vibrant appliqué art. In Pipli, local artisans skillfully cut colored cloth into intricate shapes of animals, birds, flowers, gods, and other decorative motifs, sewing them onto fabric to create stunning artwork. This is a great opportunity to appreciate the region's rich craft traditions.
Afterward, proceed to Konark, home to the spectacular Sun Temple, also known as the Chariot of the Sun God. Built by King Langula Narasingh Deva in the 13th century A.D., the temple is dedicated to the Sun God and is famous for its detailed and ornate architecture. The term ‘Konark’ is derived from two words— ‘Kona’ meaning corner and ‘Arka’ meaning sun—signifying ‘Sun of the Corner.’ The temple, known for its intricate carvings and grandeur, has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After an enriching day, you will continue your journey to Puri for an overnight stay at the hotel.3
Puri to Satpada
After a refreshing breakfast, your day begins with a visit to the world-renowned Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri. This sacred temple is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Hindus and forms a part of the Char Dham Yatra. While the temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Jagannath, it also worships other deities.
The original structure of the temple was built by the Kalinga ruler Anantavarman Chodaganga (1078-1148 CE), but the current edifice largely dates back to the reign of King Ananga Bhima Deva in 1174 CE, taking 14 years to complete and consecrated in 1198 CE. The temple, with its stunning architecture and spiritual significance, draws millions of devotees each year.
Following your temple visit, proceed with a scenic drive to Satpada, located at the edge of Chilika Lake, India’s largest inland brackish water lagoon. The vastness of Chilika, spread across more than 1,100 square kilometers, makes it a paradise for nature lovers. Here, you can embark on a motorboat ride (available at your own expense) to explore the serene waters of the lake.
The highlight of the boat ride is the opportunity to spot the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins, particularly at the mouth where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal. After an exciting day exploring the natural beauty of Chilika Lake, you’ll return to Puri for an overnight stay at your hotel, reflecting on the peaceful and picturesque experiences of the day.
